FAQ

Who is a candidate for a Davis® Program?

From the age of eight and older, anyone gifted with dyslexia or other learning challenges can benefit.  Of those who have been helped by this program some have had no formal diagnosis, while others have been labeled with problems in dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, dyspraxia, auditory processing, ADD/ADHD, learning disabilities, Asperger’s, sensory intergration problems, and many other labels.

For those ages 5-7 there is a two week program done in half days.  These programs cost the same, but do require a parent to be present.

How do I know if someone is ready for a Davis Program?

When a person is motivated and willing to make a change to improve at least one academic area, then it is time!  It also should be understood by the individual that in addition to the program week, there will be expectation that they will follow a plan afterward to complete the Trigger Word list.  During that same time they will be doing very short exercises in reading (if this were a program with that academic goal), tossing Koosh™ balls, and owning an awareness to independently use their Davis tools.

What if someone seems ready, can that be confirmed?

Perceptual Ability Assessments can be performed at the office for $50.  The Assessments are described in The Gift of Dyslexia by Ronald D. Davis.  This screening takes about 1 ½ hours and allows the facilitator to recommend whether a program is appropriate or likely to help the client.

What about medications?

A person must be willing to disclose information about medications and herbs that are being taken before scheduling a program.  Davis Programs are meant to be done while a person is free of certain medications such as stimulants, cough suppressants, codeine, etc.  These types of medications can interfere with one’s success in mastering orientation, but a person should never discontinue any medication without the advice of the prescribing physician.

How is this program different from others?

Davis methods address the root causes of learning differences by tapping into creative talents. During a program people learn tools to correct inaccurate perception so focus can be controlled.  Davis teaches to the picture thinking style that is so natural for people who rely strongly on visual thinking.  The strong verbal thinker has no trouble thinking with words that have no pictures, such as:  the, were, put, is, how, of, as.  However, nonverbal thinkers must have pictures for these words in order to ‘think’ with them, otherwise thinking stops and confusion begins.  The Trigger Word list of 217 trigger words is referenced in Ronald D. Davis’ book, The Gift of Dyslexia. These words are a majority of any communication, and can cause a nonverbal thinker to have blanks because a picture of the word is not present.  When blanks are filled, learning occurs. The Davis Program emphasizes that mastery of these words involves making a picture for each of them in order to have certainty of meaning when they are encountered in reading, writing, speaking or listening.  Using clay, mastery is completed when a  three-dimensional picture is made for each word.

This program uses simple reading exercises that are not based in phonics. People suited for this style of learning can easily become bored with repetition or drill, which is why a sight approach is the basis for building a vocabulary with which to read and write.

What is included in a Davis Program?

~Five consecutive days of one-to-one facilitation (25-30 hrs.).

~Support training for families or educators on the afternoon of the fifth day.

~Materials for work that week, and later at home.

~Unlimited phone and email communication.

~Up to 3 two hour review visits after the program.

What is the schedule during the program?

~Mon.-Fri. 9am to 4pm with a 12:30-1:30 lunch break.  A responsible adult must be available to supervise children during lunch.

~Breaks are taken, as needed throughout the day.

Is this program for adults, too?

Definitely!  The age record at Dyslexia Correction of Virginia stands at 77 years.  Level of education has no boundaries, with one individual holding a PhD in reading…yes, reading.

What is the cost of a Davis Program?

The entire program is $3,000.  A deposit of $1,500 is required to reserve the week.  The balance of $1,500 is due the first morning of the program.  If a Perceptual Ability Assessment was done, then the charge for that will be deducted from the deposit.

What improvement can be noticed in one week?

The age and motivation of the client will be a factor in seeing improvement.  At Dyslexia Correction of Virginia several months to over three years improvement have been seen.  Future progress depends upon the motivation to complete the Trigger Word list after the program, and to continue with what was learned during the program week.

Are there others who can share their experiences with Davis?

Upon request, there is a list of contacts that will be happy to share their experiences with the program.

What is expected of someone after they do a Davis Program?

Mastery of the 217 words on the Trigger Word list is expected.  Koosh™ ball exercises, and exercises in reading or other targeted academic areas, will be discussed at support training and practiced for a time after the program. Daily use of the tools for maintaining focus.

What changes in self esteem might occur?

Within the first few days of the program, family members often notice positive changes in self esteem.  Age is a factor when realizing new self awareness.   Discovering how one learns is often a positive experience, as well as being more in control of thinking.  Ultimately, people report a sense of empowerment and enhanced natural talents and creativeness.
